Atmosphere DNS is a powerful feature offered by Neptune that allows you to block ads across your network using Sinkhole DNS technology. This feature can also be used for parental control, giving you more control over the types of content accessible on your network.
Before proceeding, please ensure that you are using our set of DNS servers. These servers are assigned via DHCP, but we understand that many users prefer to use their own.
DNS1: 103.252.194.10
DNS2: 160.250.144.3
DNS1 IPv6: 2401:dc20:3::3
DNS2 IPv6: 2401:2520:10::10
Atmosphere supports DNS over HTTPS (DoH), a protocol that encrypts DNS queries to enhance user privacy and security by preventing third parties from monitoring or tampering with DNS traffic.
What is Sinkhole DNS?
Sinkhole DNS works by intercepting requests to known ad and tracking domains and preventing your device from connecting to them. When you try to access a site that’s blocked by Atmosphere DNS, the page won’t load, and your browser will display a connection error. By redirecting these unwanted requests, Sinkhole DNS effectively “sinks” them, keeping ads, tracking scripts, and certain types of harmful content from loading.
Important Considerations Before Enabling Atmosphere DNS
While Atmosphere DNS can greatly enhance your browsing experience by blocking ads, it may also prevent some websites from loading correctly. If you enable this feature, be aware that some websites may appear broken or certain pages may not load as expected. If you experience any issues or are unsure if this is the right feature for you, we recommend either not enabling it or disabling it if you’re unhappy with the experience.
Please note: Once enabled, the Atmosphere DNS policy will be applied to the entire service, affecting all users and devices in your household. At this time, it is not possible to apply different settings for individual users or devices.
Important: Atmosphere DNS relies on DNS servers that are automatically assigned via DHCP. If you manually override these DNS servers with a different set, the Atmosphere DNS feature will not function as intended. Ensure that the DHCP-assigned DNS servers are in use to enable full functionality.
How to Enable Atmosphere DNS
To enable Atmosphere DNS:
Log in to your Neptune account and select the service you want to configure.
Go to Actions and select Atmosphere.
We recommend switching on the “Recommended” toggle at the top. This setting blocks commonly unwanted content, including ads.
You can also select additional categories that you prefer to block, such as sites with adult content or specific social media platforms, for enhanced parental control.
Using Atmosphere DNS as a Parental Control Tool
Atmosphere DNS can be an effective parental control tool, enabling you to block certain categories of websites and manage what types of content are accessible on your network.
DNS over HTTPS
DNS over HTTPS (DoH) is a protocol that encrypts DNS queries, ensuring that user requests to translate domain names into IP addresses remain private and secure. Unlike traditional DNS, which transmits queries in plain text, DoH sends these requests over HTTPS, making it difficult for third parties, such as ISPs or malicious actors, to monitor or tamper with the data. This enhanced privacy helps prevent tracking and improves security by protecting users from DNS spoofing and other attacks. DoH is increasingly supported by modern browsers and services, contributing to a more secure internet experience.
Neptune Internet provides the following DoH servers:
DoH Firefox Configuration
Please type about:settings
-> Privacy & Security -> Enable DNS over HTTPs.
Choose Increased Protection.
Select Custom provider and specify either of the servers
Make sure the server is Active.
DoH Chrome Configuration
Select the three dot menu, then Settings.
Privacy and Security -> Security.
Scroll down and select Use Secure DNS
Select DNS Provider -> Add custom DNS provider.
Specify either:
Special Note: Google Shopping and Other Shopping Sites
If you notice that Google Shopping links or other shopping sites aren’t working properly, check the second toggle labeled “Permit Shopping”. Disabling this option may cause some shopping-related sites, like Google Shopping, to stop working. To ensure these sites work correctly, keep this toggle enabled if in doubt.
By enabling Atmosphere DNS, you can control your browsing experience and block unwanted content effectively. However, for the best experience, configure the settings according to your preferences and keep the shopping toggle on if you frequently visit shopping sites.
Review our privacy policy regarding Atmosphere to understand what data is being stored.
